Map Quest

“Cartographies of Time,” published by Princeton Architectural Press, is an eye-popping record of the ways that mapmakers, chronologists, artists and other infographics geeks have tried to convey the passage of time visually. “What does history look like?” the coauthors Daniel Rosenberg and Anthony Grafton write in their introduction. “How do you draw time?”

All of us are familiar with the old-fashioned timelines showing the march from antiquity to the industrial age, and Rosenberg and Grafton include some gorgeous examples.

Treehotel, a collection of modern structures in the unvisited woods of northern Sweden, by the architectural firm Tham & Videgård Arkitekter. A mirrored glass cube suspended from a tree outside the village of Harads, thirty seven miles south of the Arctic Circle. To stumble upon the cube in its boreal surroundings is to experience Philip Johnson’s Glass House turned inside-out: eye-to-eye with yourself in the expanse, you are suddenly aware of solidarity in an environment not your own.

'Into The Tunnels: Exploring The Underside Of NYC'

Steve Duncan lives dangerously.

The urban explorer goes underground, examining the hidden infrastructure of major cities all over the world — their tunnels, subways, sewers. In New York City, his favorite underground adventure, he could drown when the tide comes in or succumb to toxic gases in the sewers. He could be hit by a train or step on the third rail. "Czarist Russia's Fascination With Italian Textiles"

The centuries-long pursuit of the finest Italian silk weaves by the Russian court and church and the prodigious sums they spent on them have left Russia, despite losses during war and revolution, with an immense patrimony of rich and rare Italian textiles, only a fraction of which have ever been put on general public view.

Between them the Hermitage in St. Petersburg and the Kremlin Museum in Moscow have well over 5,000 examples of historic Italian textiles. 

These two institutions have joined forces with the Hermitage Italia Foundation and Prato’s Textile Museum to lay out some of these fabulous wares, and relate the story of how they found their way east to the centers of Russian political and ecclesiastical power, in “The Style of the Czar: Art and Fashion between Italy and Russia from the 14th to the 18th Century.”

"The Unknown Hipster"

Born French (naturally), Unknown Hipster moved to New York to become a painter, a poet, or anything (within reason) art world related. All that can be said is that Unknown frequently appears at fashionable and cultural events without being necessarily on the list.

"Everything is going to be alright"

A frozen sea with nothing on the horizon, except for a large ship that is forcing its way through the ice. 

A tiny figure is walking a few metres ahead of this icebreaker, as if it has to lead the way. 

A more monumental image could hardly be imagined. 

Van der Werve, wearing an ordinary coat that hangs loosely around his body as if he has just left his house, has ventured onto thin ice. 

The distance between his footsteps on the ice and the channel opening up behind him is sometimes so slight that it makes you hold your breath. But looking behind him could be fatal. 

The sight of that colossus of a ship and the knowledge that it could swallow him up at any moment could suddenly make his knees go weak. 

Reality, with all its disasters and terrifying tricks, could be breathing down his neck. Walking on imperturbably is his only chance, and as long as he keeps up his pace, everything is going to be alright.
