"Mannerism and Modernism: The Kasper Collection of Drawings and Photographs"

The Morgan Library & Museum presents over one hundred drawings and photographs from the collection assembled by American fashion designer Herbert Kasper—known simply as Kasper. The collection, exceptional for its distinctive character and superb quality, is being exhibited to the public for the first time.

The unusual, tripartite nature of the holdings is a testament to both Kasper's personal taste and his desire to build a truly unique collection. It is focused in three areas: sixteenth- and seventeenth-century old master drawings from the Mannerist period, modern and contemporary drawings, and photography. Most of the great Mannerist draftsmen—primarily Italian but also Northern European—are represented, including Perino del Vaga, Polidoro da Caravaggio, Giorgio Vasari, and Hendrick Goltzius. 

'The World of Lucas Cranach'

 Lucas Cranach was one of the greatest European painters of the 16th century. This exhibition - the first to be devoted to the artist in a Benelux country - replaces the work of this leading figure of the German Renaissance in the social, cultural, and artistic context of his time.

The exhibition is on view until January 23 2011 at Bozar.

A court painter, he also rubbed shoulders with great figures such as Martin Luther, while liberating nudity and the power of women in a sensual, anti-academic style.

Some 150 paintings, drawings, and rarely seen engravings show the authenticity and originality of his sophisticated artistry, his work in the studio, and his close bonds with his German, Italian, and Dutch contemporaries, including Dürer and Metsys. A journey through a fascinating period in European history.

Piet Mondrian's First Retrospective Since 1969, at Centre Pompidou

Aside from being a seminal European post-war artist and founder of the De Stijl movement, Piet Mondrian is one of those artists that had an all encompassing vision that manifested itself in all aspects of his life, beyond the canvas.

On view now at the Centre Pompidou in Paris is Mondrian's first retrospective in France since 1969. And one of the highlights of the exhibit is an exact reconstruction of his Parisian apartment; his space looks like a three-dimensional, live version of his paintings- geometric shapes and primary colors galore. The retrospective runs through March 21st, 2011.
