A pair of the iconic ruby red slippers from "The Wizard of Oz" is going up for auction with an estimated price of $2 - $3 million.

California auction house Profiles in History said the slippers -- one of four known surviving pairs made for the 1939 movie -- are believed to have been worn by Judy Garland's Dorothy when she clicks her heels to return home to Kansas near the end of the film. 

The slippers will be auctioned on December 16 in Los Angeles as part of a Hollywood memorabilia sale.

First Edition of One of Earliest Printed History Books for Sale at Bonhams

A fine first edition of one of the earliest printed histories, the Nuremberg Chronicle (or Liber chronicarum) of July 1493, is for sale at Bonhams Printed Books and Manuscripts sale in London on 7 June. It is estimated at $40,000-50,000. 

The most lavishly illustrated printed book of the 15th century, the Nuremberg Chronicle is, essentially, a history of the known world. One of the first books to combine text and illustration successfully it contains over 1800 woodcuts including world and European maps and city views. It is one of the most famous and sought after incunables – the technical term for books printed before 1500. 

Written in Latin by Hartmann Schedel - in Germany the book is known as Schedel’s World History - it was produced in Nuremberg by Michael Wolgemut and published by Anton Koberger, the Renaissance equivalent of a publishing tycoon, who owned printing presses throughout Europe. Koberger’s godson, Albrecht Dürer, was apprenticed to Wolgemut between 1486 and 1489 when the initial commission was made and may well have participated in early work on the designs. 

Of the 1,400-1,500 copies of the Nuremberg Chronicle in Latin, around 400 are thought to have survived. A version in German was produced six months afterwards in December 1493, of which 300 copies are still known to exist. 

Tycoon Toys

The December 17 sale of the Malcolm Forbes Toy Collection presented the toy boats, soldiers, motorcycles and classic board games lovingly gathered over nearly four decades by legendary collector Malcolm Forbes and his sons.

Each area of the collection is amongst the finest of its kind, boasting rare and important examples by the leading toy makers in the field - from a Märklin recreation of the Cunard Line's "Lusitania" ocean liner, circa 1912, to a rare group of Medieval Mounted Knights crafted by Richard Courtenay, to the earliest surviving handmade Monopoly game-set, circa 1933. 

The major portion of the sale will consisted of a captivating array of sports, naval, commercial and luxury toy boats - arguably one of the finest collections of its type in the world. It reflects the best examples from the 1870s through the 1950s, which is known as the Golden Age of Toys, and includes examples from every major toy boat maker, many originating from the Nuremburg area in Germany, among them Märklin, Bing, Fleischmann and Carette.

The largest toy boat in the collection, 47" long, is the cast-iron French Gas-Powered Heavily Armored Gunboat (est. $200/300,000), a replica of a 19th century battleship with a gas-powered engine and zinc and bronze details also known as “Andre the Giant.” A top lot of the sale, it is currently the only known example of its kind. Also among the featured lots is the Märklin recreation of the Cunard Line’s "Lusitania" ocean liner (est. $100/200,000), which was sunk in 1915 by a German submarine, helping to precipitate America's entry into World War I.

FBI Recovered Antiquarian Library to Be Sold At Auction

Leslie Hindman Auctioneers announces an auction featuring over 75 lots of early Italian and Latin literature from the antiquarian book library of John Sisto of Berwyn, Illinois. The books, maps and engravings comprise what remains of the over 3,500 items seized by the Chicago division of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in 2007, of which 1,600 items were repatriated to Italy after being deemed unlawfully imported. 

The collection had been brought to the attention of the FBI by Mr. Sistos heirs, following his death in 2007. After an extensive review of the materials by the FBI Art Crime Team, the Italian Command for the Protection of Cultural Heritage, and the Italian Ministry for Cultural Assets and Archives, who identified the items as having come from the Bari region of Italy, approximately 1,600 items were returned to conferring institutions and private collections in their country of origin. 

The origin and ownership of the remaining 2,000 recovered items could not be determined and, as such, they were returned to the estate of John Sisto. The majority of these items, which include rare eighteenth-century scientific and theological books, dictionaries and maps, will be offered in a featured session of over 75 lots in the March 16th Fine Books and Manuscripts auction at Leslie Hindman Auctioneers. 

The items will be on public exhibition Sunday, March 14th, from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., and Monday, March 16th, from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. The auction will begin at 12:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 16th.
